Gimp 2.8 Photoshop Tweaks by doctormo Gimp 2.8 Photoshop Tweaks by doctormo
To help a fellow deviant, I've put together a download that anyone with Gimp 2.8 on Linux can use to make their copy of gimp look more like Adobe Photoshop and make people more comfortable.

I've taken various bits of guides online and various tweaks. All you have to do is download the file, unzip it. Then in the file manager go to your home folder, show hidden files, delete or move your old .gimp-2.8 configuration folder out of the way, and replace with the new one. Then load gimp. Then me know if it works for you or if it fails.

Update: Icon were blurry in the original icon theme. I've patched them all up to be much clearer.
Update2: The drop here text is now gone and the default background when loading is the same dark grey.
Update3: Now on github github.com/doctormo/GimpPs

Will you be making this available for Gimp 2.10? seeing it just came out.

Honestly, I'd be happy just to be able to remove the "You can drop dockable toolboxes here" text and the Wilber logo from empty boards.

I will have to do some testing, does it work at all in 2.10? I suspect not.

I have not tried but doing a quick check in windows under user profile. I do not see .gimp folder. Also it does not all scales correctly for 4k display anyways.

The place to put the theme now should be C:\Users\<Your username>\AppData\Roaming\GIMP\2.10

It certainly has scaling issues for 4k (and other hi-res)

Hey! This might sound counter-productive to a lot of you guys but how do I revert it back to the normal, vanilla version?
I'm gonna be teaching a class on gimp and want to students to see the same screen they will see on their pc's.
I've tried uninstalling and re-downloading gimp but that didn't remedy it.
Thanks!

You need to remove your .gimp2.8 folder from your home directory (assuming you're using Linux)

I'm using windows 10. Very sorry, I should have been more specific.
I've gone as far as deleting everything with "gimp" in the name but when I re-download and re-install it still opens up with the PS aesthetic

Ah then I'm not entirely sure where the settings file is, maybe in some sort of hidden folder in a shared configuration or caches directory? Can you remember where you installed the files in the zip? That's where you have to delete them from.

I like it all but I don't want to change the hotkeys. Which file controls the shortcut keys?

Edit nvm figured it out, it's the "menurc" file

Great work mate!

For Gimp 2.8 on Linux

mv ~/.gimp-2.8 ~/.gimp-2.8.old then extract the downloaded zip archive to your home folder

I believe there are icon themes available on the internet. But if not pre-packaged, I believe you can pick out the icons from the zp file.

Have a look at the gtkrc files, there's just a bunch of css and if you can work out which hex colours to change, you could make a dark theme. I'd be interested in the patch here for others. Although I think the icons might have to be reversed too.

Wow! Works and looks like a charm! Much obliged, I'm more used to using Photoshop at my college, so this will make doing work at home a bit easier ^_^
One question though (Though probably a dumb one), Is there any way to change the colour of the borders and such to grey, as to make it look more like Photoshop?

Which borders are not grey? If it's the window borders, then I think that's an operating system thing, like on my Linux machine, windows all have thing grey borders. If it's some other borders, can you take a screenshot and mark on it where the issue is?

hi there- I love this, I love the icons, the docks on the side, pretty much everything!  I followed a tutorial that said to make the 2.8 folder a backup, and make a new one to add all your files into- but that means things like the brushes folder and the plugins folder are gone now. is that right?

That is right, you would need to copy/install those things back in. It's not a perfect solution in that regard.

ah, so what I SHOULD have done maybe, is COPY the folder, and pasted your files in, letting them rewrite the ones you were replacing?

Would be really cool if you were to add the layerfx.py plugin. I use layer effects in almost everything i do in photoshop, can't understand why a 9 year old plugin hasn't been properly absorbed into the main product yet......very linux!

Working on 2.8.22 in windows 10 btw, thank you!!! I added the plugin myself of course so no biggy ;)

EDIT: It all becomes clear...I just tried to actually use the layer effects plugin properly ....   it needs a little TLC before it gets any airtime in the main build :)

Usually it's either a) because the developers don't know about it or b) the plugin doesn't have the backing to really make it work.

It's work to do these things, sometimes I think we need a patereon just for gimp support projects.

I reveled in PS for years w/ the eMac. Couldn't transfer it to the "new" 2011 iMac (still using the iMac, w/Sierra). So, before I paid a decent price for PS Elements 11, which is basically PS, but with several cool features missing, I found a free GIMP download. Remarkable an app like that was/is free. The thing is a monster for creativity, but has a pretty steep learning curve. I'm no techie, but I'm not entirely ignorant either, and I found that trying to initially figure out how to navigate the Gimp tools and effects was mind-bending. Even after getting going pretty good, I still had to re-learn certain techniques, over and over again. Now today, on Softonic, I find a FREE Gimp download, but one that is set-up to look like Photoshop!!!. That sounded real good to me!!! The catch though, at least according to Softonic, is that it won't work unless I download and install Apple X11: "...The X Window System (more commonly known as X or X11) is a computer software system and network protocol that provides a graphical user interface (GUI) for networked computers. In a nutshell, it enables you to build GUI environments...." The article also states: "...You'll need to be well versed in network computing and programming to work out how to use Apple X11, but you can be at least assured that this is the most important implementation of The X Windows System on the Mac." Let me assure you, I am not well-versed in programming, etc. In fact, it scares the shit out of me, as I don't want to mess around with Terminal and coding and such, and permanently compromise my computer! As is obvious based on youtube tutorials, this PS designed Gimp is all the rage. Has anyone had to deal with this X11 Window system (nothing to do w/Microsoft "Windows")? Has anyone been able to get the new-look Gimp withOUT dealing with X11? I'm really excited to try using the awesome power of Gimp, but am very tentative about programming. Any feedback would be very appreciated!!!~E

>> Since the 2.8.2 version, GIMP runs on OSX natively. No X11 environment is required.

You don't need Xwindows any more (xwindows is the old unix windowing system, nothing to do with Microsoft).

If you want this theme, you should install it into the right place in your home directory. I'm not entirely sure what it is for Mac.

I wouldn't trust anything from Softonic though, you should get your gimp from Gimp.org and then add the theme in, it's more trustworthy.

I'm not entirely sure about windows 7, I know people have gotten it to work on windows though.

The trick is to find the existing Gimp2.8 configuration directory which is somewhere in your user folder, and once you have found it, you need to replace it with the one in the zip file. You probably need to use the search feature in the file app you have.

Sorry I can't be more specific on the solution. good luck!

It's a collection of Gtk/Gimp themes. The construction and settings have been known for a long time.

If you'd like the technical details, there's a github page where you can ask those questions. But reading the gtk files is a first go. It's very much like css.
