There is nothing pro about "pro-level applications", it's a term only used by a selection of people who assume that using heavily hyped, branded products makes you better at a job; As if Nike trainers made one a better runner or using Kenmore made one a better cook.
If the only thing that keeps you from trying out a whole ecosystem of applications is that you need the space* for over priced and over sized "pro-applications" then you can't have much experience.
Of course you _might_ have meant pro-applications like those used by animation studios, but somehow I think you meant the Adobe creative suite for the amateur pro.
* Wouldn't be so funny but for space being sold for 7¢ per GB and that you only needed 5GB and _that_ could be on an external USB hard drive.
There is something pro about pro-level applications. They are designed by teams, with purpose. GIMP used to side side by side with Photoshop, an era ago. GIMP cannot claim to be viable against a Photoshop user of equal skill, because, yes, it is integrated with a suite of applications that work with each other. With this integration, it is easy to create a simple, effective workflow. Serious question, because I don't know, is there any GNU suites that hold a candle to Adobe's suite.
As for animation, I dabbled in it, but did not have the gumption for it.
I am going to concede to you that Blender is an amazing application, BTW
The question about workflow is valid, but it's more meta and 'in the user's hands' than you might think. The operating system can help in that regard if done right, but that's something for the future.
For now lets just say that open standards are far more important for longevity of work and creation of novel workflows.
Of course the current gimp ui sucks like it was designed by Enterprise writers with both their eyes poked out and their coffee rations removed. But that doesn't mean that it's not as capable, it might not match toe to toe right now but that doesn't mean it's not useful.
An example: If I teach a "Photoshop" class at a community center, giving local artists a chance to explore computer tools what would be better, using Photoshop which I (as a community center) would get for almost free or Gimp which might not be able to do professional print processing but I could legally and freely give copies to all students for all platforms so they can take home and use to do homework.
Thank you very much! Please consider adding this to your favourites as well as some of the original works when you do a deviantArt search for "Ubunchu"
