A small diagram showing how artist's intentions mix with viewers (pre-)conceptions in different ways when producing art.
the one that most people (even artists) don't get is randomness. There is a chance that something you do wrong will be a successful piece of artwork. This doesn't mean that randomness is always art, even if some artists have made quite a bit of money from their names by doing random things.
Conflict is not always a bad thing. The idea of an evolutionary process is that some ideas will die, while others will live. You don't need to think why, there's no room for English Literature introspection here, just smash ideas together until you get a new element and see if it can survive the harsh reality of the subject.
The one we all know most fondly is sophisticated refinement. Surely art that everyone loves can be done better, some idea more skilfully prepared or delivered with more impact.
Most great artists I've known here on deviantArt are veterans at using all three, and they know when to use them and when not to. All in the name of art.
