Last time I checked, rationality = good, subjectivity = bad. Or is there some unknown benefit on the things that come from the depths of the unconscious realm?

Yes, you've hit the error on the head. Subjectivity isn't bad, it's just subjective. If you want rationale testable proof of things i.e. sciences, then you want thinking. But for emotion, it's important that we understand why our own emotions are not as understandable as someone else's.
See applying subjectivity to a rationale argument is bad; but Applying subjectivity to deciding what you want for breakfast is good. You wouldn't condemn your breakfast simply because your choice was made subjectively.
In design we have to understand both rationality and the 'internal relatedness of a system' (which is often the human brain) and designers are keen explorers of emotion.

The problem lies not with those who are mad and know it, but with those who are mad and don't know it.
